Sonos S2 update adds DTS Digital Surround support

A new update is now available for the Sonos S2 software which will introduce new features including support for decoding DTS Digital Surround.

The company is working to make improvements to its platform after recognising the growing ‘Hollywood at Home’ trend, with the amount of straight-to-streaming movie premieres having tripled globally over the last year.

With this in mind, Sonos has added support for decoding DTS Digital Surround, giving customers a more immersive way to experience their Blu-ray discs, gaming consoles, and more. The update also serves as a next step in Sonos’ effort to democratise high fidelity sound with products that are easy to use, high sound quality, and are compatible with any entertainment the user chooses.

Decoding DTS Digital Surround support is now available on Arc, Beam (Gen 1 & 2), Playbar, Playbase, and Amp on S2. Customers will see a badge on the Now Playing screen of the Sonos app when they are streaming DTS Digital Surround content.

The update has also introduced Battery Saver mode on Roam and Move. When this setting is enabled via the Sonos app, the portable speakers will automatically turn off completely after 30 minutes of inactivity. When powered off, Move will retain battery life for up to 30 days and Roam will retain battery life for up to 70 days. When Battery Saver is enabled, listeners will need to turn Roam and Move on using the physical power button before starting music playback.

The final feature added by the software update is that iOS customers streaming music will now be able to adjust their EQ settings, including treble, bass and loudness via the Now Playing screen in the Sonos app. To access the EQ settings from the Now Playing screen, users should tap the volume slider bar and press the settings button on the right-hand side. Android support will be available in the coming months.

As well as decoding for DTS Digital Surround support, Sonos has also revealed that support for Amazon Music Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos Music will be introduced soon.
