Gfk: 10% growth expected in UK Projector market (16/4/2008)

With slightly more than 1/4 of a million units, the overall size of the Data-/Video Projector market in 2007 remained flat compared to 2006 in terms of volume sales. The year was characterised by significant price erosion across all of the major channels, meaning that market value declined by 20% to around £180m.

Audio Visual Specialists remained the dominant channel in 2007. However there was a big impact from IT Mail Order Stores, who increased their volume share by 27% in 2007, which accounted for 24% of total Projector sales. This was up from 18% in 2006.

High-spec is at home in the Specialist channel. 12% of total Projectors sold in 2007 had an aspect ratio of 16:9 compared to only 2% in the IT Mail Order channel. HD ready, which accounted for 75% of all TV's purchased last year, is also becoming more significant in the Projector market taking a 7% share in 2007 and looking like a positive growth sector for the next year.

Sandra Bayly, UK Senior Account Manager at GfK for Audio Visual comments, "I expect the Projector market to grow sales by around 10% in 2008 as the demand of enhanced features increases further. Prices continue to decline, so this will be a supporting mechanism in stabilising the market value, as well as offering improved performance in the product".
