Orbitsound shows its revolutionary personal stereo aura (16/11/2007)

British technology company shows its amazing new personal stereo playback system for the first time at What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision Show

The problem with personal music systems like the iPod(r) or the Walkman(r) is that you have to wear headphones. And the trouble with headphones is that they are not really stereo - just two separate mono signals clamped to your ears.

Listening to stereo means hearing the sound from both speakers with both ears - that's what gives you the stereo soundfield in between the speakers. With headphones you can only hear the left speaker in the left ear and the right speaker in the right: most people therefore hear the sound in the middle or back of their head, as opposed to in front and around you.

Imagine though if you could walk around with your own 'personal stereo aura' around your head. Well imagine orbitsound, the miracle personal soundfield generator that hangs around your neck and plugs into your iPod(r), Walkman(r), music phone, personal media player, PSP(r) - anything that plays stereo sound on the move. With orbitsound the music is literally in the air, all around your head - and in perfect spatial stereo. With orbitsound you are not isolated from the environmental sounds around you, as you are with headphones; you can listen to your entertainment and still be aware of traffic noise and people around or behind you in the street.

As well as providing high quality sound on the move, orbitsound also provides you with a portable high quality sound system at your desk, or when you're travelling, for use with your laptop or desktop computer, or to music or watching movies on a personal media player in a hotel room. orbitsound(r) sits flat on a desktop and fills the entire room with spatial stereo sound; as a 'single point stereo' stereo replay system, using revolutionary airSOUND(r) technology.

With orbitsound you can share music on your personal media player with friends, in high quality stereo, by placing it on any flat surface - no more passing round the single headphone earpiece or listening on a tiny speaker on a mobile phone.

orbitsound also employs the unique BODYSOUND(tm) effect which uses your chest cavity as a resonator to reinforce the sound from the unit when worn around your neck. Of course it is not always desirable to play the orbitsound in aura mode, especially in crowded public places, so the unit allows you to plug in headphones in for private listening. When using headphones, the BODYSOUND effect switches into bass mode to reinforce the headphone sound with a deep sub sensation.

orbitsound hangs around your neck on a lanyard with a cool hold and release grip, that tightly secures the orbitsound when in worn and also allows you to easily release it to store away in your pocket or your bag. Its compact dimensions - at just 107 x 60 x 27 mm - are in inverse proportion to its powerful, high sound-quality performance. Weighing at 130 g, orbitsound is powered by a lithium rechargeable battery providing up to 10 hours playing time on a single charge.

Styled by a leading young UK design house, orbitsound exhibits a compact form and sense of minimalist cool that belies the technology beneath its skin. The silver colour scheme and metallic finish further enhance its gadget icon status.
