News Atlas introduces Silver-line interconnects (31/8/2007) Scottish specialist cable manufacturer, Atlas Cables, has announced the introduction of an exciting new product; researched, designed and developed for assembly and manufacture in Scotland. For some time Atlas has been working to introduce a genuinely high quality interconnect cable. This interconnect has been in development for a very long time and is almost certainly the ultimate in signal cable topology. In structure it consists of Ohno Continuous Cast (OCC) pure silver stranded conductors with a PTFE (Teflon) dielectric laid in twisted pairs suspended in a bed of cotton yarn for the reduction of microphony; the whole array being contained within an outer sheath of PVC with a blue-black cotton fabric cover. Ohno Continuous Cast materials have long been employed by Atlas Cables for their superior performance. The moulding process of the copper or silver metal is performed in such a way that the metallurgical structure is reduced to one single crystal. When the resulting moulded extrusion is drawn out into a typical 0.03 sq mm strand, the length of that single crystal is an extraordinary 125 metres; and, to all intents and purposes, there are no crystal boundaries to impede the signal as it passes down the conductor. Not only does OCC silver have a lower resistance than copper, it does, unlike other silver materials, have a complete absence of any crystal boundaries in the conductor and so the signal can pass through in a totally coherent form with disruptions or any significant losses. The OCC Silver conductor is built up of strands of two different sized wires insulated by a layer of PTFE and then surrounded by a shield of stranded copper wire and a copper-mylar foil. The overall diameter of the cable is 7.5mm and it is terminated at each end by a new design of RCA plug that has a beryllium insert that gives a very tight fit and a freedom from the tendency to slacken that afflicts many lesser connectors. The new Atlas Silver-line interconnects will retail in the UK for about £1,000.00.
