Absolute Sounds offers DreamVision's DreamBee 1080p three-chip D-ILA projector (23/7/2007)

Three-chip D-ILA technology delivers top-notch 1080p 'Full HD' video for a fraction of the price of DLP equivalents

The new DreamBee video projector breaks new ground for performance, style, price and ease of use. Created by French firm DreamVision and distributed in the UK by Absolute Sounds, it harnesses the latest video display and processing technologies to deliver Full HD resolution (1920x1080 pixels) for the most realistic picture imaginable.

And it's not just the projected video images that look great - the DreamBee's curvy, moulded casework looks stunning, too. Created by world-famous French designer Pinault Le Porcher and available in a variety of high-gloss colours, it looks every bit the desirable, highend product that it undoubtedly is - and yet its price tag is considerably lower than that of other models offering a similar level of performance. Despite all that technology and style, it's a relatively lightweight projector, specifically conceived to be easy to move around, install and set-up.

The Technology

The DreamBee harnesses three-chip D-ILA (Direct-Drive Image Light Amplifier) projection technology, as championed by JVC and optimised here to deliver exceptional picture performance. It incorporates three 0.7in 'liquid crystal on silicon' panels - one for red, one for green and one for blue - to deliver full 1080p resolution without the rainbowflicker caused by the spinning colour wheel of single-chip projectors. Yet, because the D-ILA light engine is simpler to execute from an engineering perspective, the Dream Bee is significantly less expensive than three-chip DLP-based equivalents.

The Performance

Three-chip projectors are rare beasts, and yet the improvements they bring over single-chip designs are obvious. The DreamBee delivers a picture that relaxed, natural and inviting to the eye, and yet its rendition of colour is vital and its contrast is superb. It is the DreamBee's combination of vivid clarity with a picture that's a pleasure to watch for hours on end that makes it such an utterly absorbing projector to use.

With standard DVD discs and players, the DreamBee's picture is a joy to behold. But it really comes into its own when fed with Full HD video sources like Blu-ray or HD DVD discs, or an HD broadcast service like Sky's. In such cases, its three-chip, 1080p performance is, quite simply, stunning.

DreamBee Pro

Along with the standard DreamBee, a DreamBee Pro bundle is available that includes an external 10-bit high-definition video processor in addition to the projector itself. This gives the avid cinephile access to advanced video source management and professional adjustments like VRS video processing, film-grade deinterlacing methods and dedicated game modes. Connectivity options are also expanded.
