HomePlug Powerline Alliance Gains Global Momentum (15/5/2007)

Alliance Celebrates 9 Million Products Shipped

Driving the worldwide acceptance of high-speed networking over power lines, the HomePlug(R) Powerline Alliance today announced that its member companies have now shipped over nine million powerline communications devices on six continents. Building on this momentum, Intel(R) Corporation recently disclosed at its Developer Forum in Beijing, that the company plans to include HomePlug AV technology as an optional feature on select 2008 desktop platforms.

"With the emergence of Internet-delivered video, improvements in home networking and standards such as HomePlug A/V, are vital to ensuring that high-definition digital entertainment can seamlessly get inside and move between devices in the home," said Eric Kim, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Digital Home Group. "Intel has been evaluating the performance of HomePlug AV and has found the technology to be a robust and viable solution for the home."

"HomePlug powerline communications is achieving dramatic growth around the world, fueled by a wide range of content delivery applications such as HDTV, broadband and audio distribution inside the home," said Matthew McRae, senior director of business development of Linksys and treasurer of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance. "We believe HomePlug AV offers the most compelling in-home wireline connectivity solution for the consumer wishing to create a seamless digital home entertainment experience."

"As we have reported recently, the HomePlug powerline standard is the dominant powerline technology in the market today," said Joyce Putscher, principal analyst for home networking/digital home research at In-Stat. "This latest declaration by Intel confirms HomePlug's continuing momentum and promise, and points to potentially explosive growth in the future."
