The Answer Is 42 - Sharp Presents the LC-42XD1 42-inch 1080p Full HD Aquos LCD TV (6/2/2007)

Integrated Systems Europe 2007

42 is the answer to the question of all questions, namely, the question of "Life, the Universe and Everything". After a long calculating time of 7.5 million years, the computer "Deep Thought" in Douglas Adams' book "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" finds this answer. Sharp, the technology leader in LCD TVs, has found the answer "42" much faster and, with the LC-42XD1E, for the first time presents a 1080p Full HD AQUOS LCD TV with a screen diagonal of 42 inches, equalling 107 centimetres. Together with the

LC-37XD1E measuring 37 inches (94 centimetres) diagonally, it completes the new Sharp AQUOS 1080 series coming in noble, black piano lacquer design.

"42 and 37 inches are the ideal complement for our Full HD line-up. With these sizes, Sharp is the only manufacturer in the world to offer Full HD LCD TVs ranging from 37 via 42, 46 and 52 to 65 inch screen diagonals and, consequently, it has the matching size for any kind of use in its portfolio", declares Frank Bolten, President of Sharp Electronics Germany/Austria.

"Particularly the LC-42XD1E represents a strategically important model for us. The question is which diagonal is the best link between the classic living room TVs with 32 and 37 inches and our new sizes of 46 and 52 inches. The answer is 42 inches, a learnt, accepted size in the industry, for which, for example, already many integrated solutions and furniture solutions have been developed", Bolten comments on the choice of the 107-centimetre format.

With the two AQUOS XD1E models, Sharp offers LCD television at the highest level. The native 1080p-enabled HDTV resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, in combination with a contrast ratio of 1,200:1 (native contrast ratio) and 6,000:1 (with dynamic contrast enhancement) and a brightness of 450 candelas per square metre, delivers brilliant HD images, even with short viewing distances. For tube TVs the ideal distance from the TV was three times or three and a half times the screen diagonal, whereas with HDTV, already half the viewing distance makes watching television a terrific experience. So, there is no reason to enlarge the living room at home.

Black piano lacquer optics, a beautiful stand, and the newly designed speakers mounted below the TV are characteristic features of the exceptional design of the new Sharp AQUOS 1080 XD1E series.

Action scenes, as in fast HD computer games, show what the new AQUOS TVs can display: Due to the high pixel response time of just six milliseconds and the Sharp Quick Shoot technology, moving pictures will not appear blurred any more. And there are no ghosting effects. In addition, the truD provides real motion without "judder". Smooth motion reproduction and excellent sharpness is realized.

Optical picture control (OPC) automatically adjusts the screen brightness to the lighting conditions in the room, so the picture is ideal and power consumption is as low as possible.

Moreover, the volume is automatically adjusted during commercials. The Auto Volume Control reduces the loudness to the level of the movie being watched. Thanks to the Clear Voice function, which ensures that spoken sequences appear still clearer, movies can be understood well. Full sound, almost like in the cinema, is delivered by the speaker system with two times 15 watts (LC-42XD1E) and two times 10 watts (LC-37XD1E) of music output from the digital amplifier.

A wealth of connections and interfaces as well as the integrated DVB-T tuner provide for manifold use of the TVs in maximum audio and video quality. Both sets feature two HDMI inputs with HDCP for the connection of HD sources, two Scart sockets and a slot for CI cards for easy reception of pay TV. Via the RS-232C interface, the TVs can be controlled from the PC without any problems. Computer images come to the screen via the analogue RGB PC input. An adaptor cable for a VGA component input is included in the accessories.
