Renesas Technology and Metalink Demonstrate Wireless Transfer of Three HDTV Streams Anywhere in the Home Based on the Emerging 802.11n Standard (17/3/2006)

Renesas Technology Corp., the world's leading microcontrollers company, and Metalink Ltd. (NASDAQ: MTLK), a leading provider of high performance wireless and wireline broadband communication silicon solutions, today announced that they will be demonstrating the integration of Renesas' SH4 processor and Metalink's 802.11n-compliant WLANPlus(tm) technology, enabling complete solutions for wireless home entertainment networks. The joint demonstration will take place in Tokyo, March 6-8, and in Osaka, March 10.

The demonstration will consist of three MPEG-2 (equivalently, six MPEG-4) HDTV streams transmitted wirelessly at wireline quality to three different rooms, between media servers and several high-definition television sets.

Renesas and Metalink plan to jointly develop product designs that incorporate both companies' integrated circuits. These solutions combined Renesas' SH4 processor and Metalink's WLANPlus baseband and radio frequency (RF) devices.

Tsunesato Munakata, General Manager of Custom LSI Business Unit, System Solution Business Group at Renesas Technology Corp., said: "Our customers who manufacture consumer electronics products are increasingly demanding high-performance wireless LAN capabilities in our solutions to enable multimedia delivery throughout the home. WLANPlus is an outstanding technology and we have decided to partner with Metalink in order to offer complete solutions to our customers. We have chosen to use Metalink's WLANPlus technology as the wireless LAN interface in our Super-H RISC Microprocessor family and planned family of complete solutions for networked consumer electronics products. Our Super-H MPU SH7751R supports lossless RTP between LAN (Gigabit Ethernet) and Metalink WLAN/Plus (802.11n) and succeeded to use Linux based QoS control, which provided more flexible solution such as HD video streaming and VoIP solution to customers."

Barry Volinskey, Metalink's Vice President of Wireless LAN Marketing, noted: "Renesas is a market-leading IC solutions provider. Its multiple product lines are widely used by consumer electronics manufacturers and complement Metalink's WLANPlus technology. Together we can provide added-value solutions for the networking infrastructure of the emerging broadband home."
