Sony Launches Full High Definition SXRD Projector for Real Home Cinema Experience (6/2/2006)

The Sony VPL-VW100 combines High Definition (HD) resolution thanks to the use of SXRD(TM) panels with the highest contrast ratio ever

Sony Europe has announced the introduction of the VPLVW100, an HD-resolution (1920 x 1080) SXRD(TM) projector with a 15,000:1 contrast ratio designed for home cinema enthusiasts. The projector uses the most advanced technology available to produce clear, sharp and natural images, and incorporates versatile features with a sleek white design.

The VPL-VW100 offers the highest ever contrast ratio from Sony thanks to its Advanced Iris System, which controls the shutter aperture. This permits contrast ratios of up to 15,000:1; producing white that is brighter in the bright scenes and black which is deeper in the dark scenes.

The VPL-VW100 resolution (6.22 million pixels) comes from Sony's SXRD(TM) (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) panel technology, offering HD resolutions and high quality contrast ratio. The key benefits of the use of SXRD(TM) panels are:

¥ Full HD resolution (1920 H x 1080 V)
¥ Smooth Ôfilm-like' image: Besides a small pixel size of 7µm the spacing between pixels; the interpixel spacing is just 0.35µm. This is so narrow that you won't see any visible lines on the screen Ð eliminating any chicken wire effect
¥ Crisp fast moving movies and sports thanks to an extreme fast response time of 2.5ms

"High Definition is the way forward for image reproduction. Imagine being able to get images so sharp that it looks like you have a giant window to a movie set on your wall Ð that's where we are at with this technology," commented Nathalie Muijtjens, Senior Manager, TV of Europe, Sony Europe.

Elegantly designed in glossy white, this projector is a smart and welcome addition to any home, and with extremely low fan noise of only 22dB, the audience can be assured that they will never be disturbed by intrusive equipment noise.

"Home projectors have become the hallmark of movie lovers everywhere, and they are becoming increasingly popular, thanks in part to the improvements in technology. They are still the only display device offering a true larger-than-life image of up to 300-inches (7.6 metres)," added Andreas Ditter, Director, TV of Europe. "We're pitching the VPL-VW100 at the movie enthusiasts. It re-creates the picture quality you get to see in a movie theatre, and that's down to the technology inside it. It really marks significant progress and complements our top-of-the-range EISA award winning QUALIA 004 projector."

The VPL-VW100 uses a 400 Watt Pure Xenon lamp (producing 800 ANSI lumens) that provides a flat and natural spectrum, equal to the sunlight, for great colour reproduction including pure whites and spectacular reds - like those in cinemas and movie theatres. The lamp life is estimated at 2500 hours. Thanks to a unique construction of the optical block the red, green and blue illumination paths are equal and therefore there is no colour shading. The picture can be further adjusted on the VPL-VW100 using Sony's Real Colour Processing which offers simple and accurate correction of individual colours (red, yellow, green, cyan, blue and magenta). For even further detailed gamma correction the user can use the Image Director 2 software.

This projector offers huge set-up flexibility thanks to the ARC-F (All Range Crisp Focus) 1.8 times zoom lens and the motorized vertical lens shift feature. Maximum flexibility in positioning of the projector is possible without the need for additional long, or short throw lenses. For example, a 100-inch, or 2.5 metres, diagonal screen size can be achieved between 3.1 to 5.3 metres from the screen.
