PMC-Sierra Introduces New Secure Network Storage
and Media Server Solutions for Home and Enterprise (8/12/2005)
MSP220x family provides a highly integrated,
cost-optimized solution for wireline and wireless Network Storage
and Networked Entertainment products
PMC-Sierra, Inc. (Nasdaq:PMCS) today announced
the addition of network storage devices to its broad portfolio of
Multi-Service Processor(R) (MSP) solutions. The new MSP devices
-- MSP2200, MSP2202, MSP2204 and MSP2206 -- are storage-optimized
processors integrating key features such as hard disk drive (HDD)
controllers, while providing superior performance and significantly
lower costs compared to general-purpose processors. Together with
PMC-Sierra's advanced network attached storage (NAS) software and
Mediabolic's DLNA-compliant media server software, the MSP220x family
provides:
* a comprehensive solution, including processors,
application software and product reference designs that allow ODMs
and OEMs to rapidly deliver simple and affordable network storage
products;
* the highest level of optimization and the
smallest footprint for network storage processors available, including
embedded HDD controllers, TCP/IP off-load and secure data encryption;
* simple file sharing, and enables multi-PC
backup and digital media server applications for streaming media
content to PCs or other DLNA-compliant entertainment devices on
the network; and
* the ability to deliver entry-level products
that can retail for less than $70 (without HDDs).
"The MSP220x family of network storage processors
is a natural extension to our Voice-over-IP solutions for the digital
home and office," said Dino Bekis, vice president of marketing and
applications for PMC-Sierra's Communications Products Division.
"The expansion of triple play-bundled services from carriers, along
with the rapid growth of content-intensive applications such as
digital music, photos, recorded TV shows and home movies, is driving
the demand for easy-to-use storage solutions that must seamlessly
integrate into home networks. Incorporating Mediabolic's software
enables us to enhance our robust solution by allowing it to interoperate
with a wide array of entertainment products."
"PMC-Sierra's decision to incorporate Mediabolic's
technology demonstrates the influence of centralized media server
functionality in the adoption of network storage for the home,"
said Michael Greeson, President of The Diffusion Group. "Almost
two-thirds of those that intend to adopt a home network are looking
to connect these media-centric activities. TDG anticipates that
by 2010, the total number of NAS devices in homes will exceed 15
million units. PMC-Sierra's MSP220x processor series is positioned
to address this growth with a cost-effective offering for manufacturers."
OPTIMIZED STORAGE PROCESSORS DELIVER ADVANCED
FEATURES WHILE REDUCING SYSTEM COSTS
Covering the range from residential to Small
Office/Home Office (SOHO) NAS applications, the MSP220x devices
deliver superior performance and features at significantly lower
system cost. This high level of integration delivers key features
required for shared networked storage and media server applications
such as: 10/100 Ethernet MAC, multiple HDD controllers, low-cost
DDR SDRAM support, hardware acceleration for TCP/IP off-load, encryption
and memory management, a USB port and real-time-clock.
"PMC-Sierra is bringing network storage processing
to the next level with the addition of digital media distribution,"
said Daniel Putterman, president and CEO of Mediabolic. "With PMC's
commitment to delivering high-end storage semiconductors, we can
offer an advanced, 'always-on' media server storage platform with
unparalleled price performance and a very high level of integration.
The MSP 220x family will enable our shared OEM customers to shorten
their development schedules and reduce their design risks while
simultaneously giving them added product flexibility and customization."
