Atlantic Technology Corner Mounted Subwoofer Systems: Because Subs Should be Heard, Not Seen (31/10/2005)

Atlantic Technology introduced their ICS in-corner subwoofer systems to custom installation professionals at the CEDIA Expo here today. The line's subwoofer cabinets are designed for placement in the corner of a theater, enhancing their bass performance while minimizing their visual impact on the room.

"This addresses a basic problem with custom installation," said Atlantic Technology President Peter Tribeman. "The customer wants great sound, but doesn't want to see a box subwoofer in the room and doesn't want you cutting into their walls. What are you left with? We not only solved this problem, we managed to come up with a system that actually performs better, because it incorporates corner-loaded placement in the design."

An ICS subwoofer system consists of either one or two ICS subwoofer modules, and a standalone SA-225 amplifier. Each subwoofer module uses a down-firing long-throw woofer in a sealed, corner-mounted enclosure that can be painted to match the walls to increase the 'stealth' factor. The ICS-6 and ICS-10 subwoofer modules use 6.5-inch and 10-inch woofers, respectively.

It has long been understood that placing a subwoofer in a corner (known as corner loading) greatly increases deep bass response and sound pressure level. Because they are exclusively intended for this sort of placement, the ICS subwoofer systems can take advantage of this fact, giving them substantially higher output and improved response when compared to comparably sized conventional designs.

The ICS subwoofer modules are designed for use exclusively with Atlantic Technology's SA-225 subwoofer amplifier. The SA-225 is capable of powering either one or two ICS modules, and can be configured for operation with either the ICS-6 or ICS-10 using a rear panel switch. It also has an adjustable level control and crossover, a phase inversion switch, and line level input/output jacks for daisy chaining. The SA-225 produces 225 Watts of power into four ohms, and is intended for placement with other home theater electronics components.

The ICS-6 and ICS-10 subwoofer modules will be available in December at suggested retail prices of $500 and $700 each, respectively. The SA-225 amplifier will also be available in December at a suggested retail price of $500 each.
