Sarel withstands rough weather on new luxury yacht (24/5/2005)

Pendennis Shipyard has installed glass reinforced polyester (GRP) enclosures from Sarel, a division of Schneider Electric, to protect the control systems in the multimillion-pound MITseaAH Craft. The 158ft long luxury yacht, recently launched at the Fort Lauderdale boat show, is the first yacht ever to combine the ability to perform well under the sail with the high speed performance of a motor yacht under power, and thus required durable enclosures to protect all the electrical equipment.

Given the yachting environment, GRP enclosures were the ideal choice. Unlike metal enclosures, which are prone to rust, especially in such harsh and wet weather conditions, GRP enclosures are readily able to withstand the worst conditions. "We really like the Sarel GRP enclosures because they are rigid, lightweight and we know there will be no corrosion problems," stated Mike Semmens, electrical engineer at Pendennis.

Pendennis not only required an enclosure that could withstand the wet weather at sea, they also needed a reliable enclosure that would not require much maintenance - nothing must go wrong at sea. Again GRP enclosures, that are inherently maintenance free, were the obvious solution. Sarel's Adrian Walker explains, "GRP enclosures are extremely strong and hard wearing, requiring little to no maintenance."
