OLED Technology Poised to Become Core Business for Daewoo Electronics (20/1/2005)

Daewoo Electronics CEO, Choong-Hoon Kim announced the company would strengthen its focus on the Organic Light Emitting Display (OLED) technology with plans that it will evolve into the company's future core business.

Daewoo Electronics has just finished developing an OLED pilot line this past December. The company plans to start an initial pilot production rollout early in 2005 with a mass production line to follow at the end of the year.

Daewoo Electronics forecasts worldwide sales will reach 40 million dollars and 105 million in the first year and second years of introduction. In the next 2 years, Daewoo will invest 36 million dollars to build a solid OLED foundation and position the OLED business as the company's primary revenue source in hopes of becoming a Global Top 10 company.

Daewoo Electronics' Unique OLED Technology

New Isolation Technology

Daewoo Electronics developed a new technology by fusing the insulators and separators of the passive matrix OLED into one, ala the New Isolation Technology. This technology simultaneously combines the insulators and separators into a single layer. The technology simplifies the manufacturing processes and results not only in cost reduction but also in yield improvement. Therefore, OLED products have a higher aspect ratio than competing technologies.

Thin Film Protective Layer

Daewoo Electronics is developing a thin film layer to protect the organic emitting materials from moisture and oxygen. This technology reduces the thickness and weight by 50%. It will develop a light, unbreakable and flexible OLED on a plastic substrate using this technology.

PSOELD (Plasma Switched Organic Electroluminescent Display)

Daewoo Electronics is developing a groundbreaking microdisplay technology for larger screen sizes based on plasma switched OLED (PSOELD). Compared to plasma displays, this technology will improve the driving voltage and power consumption, which has been a serious problem with plasma display units. Once development is completed, the dream of producing an OLED television 40 inches or larger will be realized. With the numerous improvements in contrast ratio, viewing angles, power consumption and product life, PSOELD will become the prevailing technology in flat panel televisions.

Incorporating its unique technologies, Daewoo Electronics will start to penetrate the smaller-sized markets of cellular phones, MP3 players, Car audio, PDAs, and then gradually extend its OLED technology to the larger-sized markets of flat panel monitors and high definition televisions.

Daewoo Electronics' full line of high-performance, value-priced products will be on display January 6-9 at the Consumer Electronics Show in booth 12214, located in the main hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
