Samsung to Use Questra IDM Software in Networked Home Initiative (19/11/2004)

Questra, a leading provider of intelligent device management (IDM) software, announced today that Samsung Corporation will use Questra software in its digital home offering known as Samsung homevita. The new solution is now undergoing a large-scale pilot deployment in Seoul, South Korea.

Samsung's homevita networks home appliances, entertainment systems, building management systems, and digital communications services, connecting the devices so that they can offer greater benefits as a system. Integrated home networking provides wireless control of home appliances, heating and air conditioning system, lighting, etc. from anywhere within and outside the home. The solution is intended to provide safety, convenience, and entertainment by making products more accessible and easier to use and by enabling them to work together in new ways. A homeowner can, for example, verify lights, appliances, and the gas valve are turned off while vacationing at a remote site, and even check visitors at the front door via a Web camera connected to the door security system.

Questra's IDM software will help manage and support these networks by keeping track of the operational status of the home network system. Questra software automatically notifies the service provider when it detects a problem with the system. A diagnostic capability built on Questra will enable remote troubleshooting so that corrective measures can be identified and deployed with minimum time and cost.

"Homevita will bring a seamless, simple, yet reliable digital lifestyle by combining Samsung's world-class products with services that will enrich and simplify the user experience. Questra's IDM solution will help deliver this product by enabling the customer support for the system in the only way that is cost effective: that is, through intelligent monitoring and one-time delivery of the problem resolution," said Hisup Park, Vice President of DSC System Solutions Group, Samsung Electronics.

"The exciting aspect about this growing IDM marketplace is the number of innovative new uses for the technology," said Emil Wang, Questra CEO. "Samsung's use of IDM in its digital home solution is a great example of how pervasive this technology has become."
