Ten Million SA-CD players and rising! (2/11/2004)

Another key factor in the establishment of any new format is the installed base of players. In the case of SA-CD there is good news of the latest sales forecast, issued by Sony's Super Audio CD Business Centre (Europe) in Amsterdam, which predicts that there will be in excess of 10 million SA-CD compatible players installed worldwide by the end of this year. In the UK alone, there is an installed user base exceeding 750,000 Home Theatre systems capable of playing SA-CDs.

Sales of SA-CD players and systems are growing strongly - from four million players worldwide in 2003 to seven million players in 2005. For its part, Sony sees SA-CD as the key audio companion to DVD-Video in its entire range of DAV Home Theatre Systems. "Customer research indicates a strong growth in demand for a new high-resolution, high quality entertainment experience. The impact of DVD-Video has been to raise the bar for the entire home entertainment market," explains Domingo Jaumandreu.Ros, Vice President Home Electronics Marketing Europe at the Sony Europe Marketing Platform. "Some technologies, like HDTV, are a little way off but in terms of high-resolution audio, we believe we already have a strong customer proposition in SA-CD. From high-end Home Theatre systems to the most affordable players, SA-CD offers a very significant 'wow factor' for our customers and this is essential in our future marketing strategy as we move ahead in Europe."
