Motorola Supports OSGi Open-Standards as Platinum
Level Sponsor at OSGi Alliance 2004 World Congress (22/6/2004)
Motorola, Inc. and the OSGi Alliance today announced
that Motorola Inc., has become a Platinum-level sponsor of the OSGi
Alliance 2004 World Congress. The annual World Congress, now in
its third year, takes place October 11-15 2004 in Barcelona, Spain.
Motorola, a board member and key contributor
to the OSGi Alliance since its inception, returns again this year
as a major sponsor of this open-to-the-public conference featuring
pre- and post-event workshops, exhibitions, keynote presentations
and breakout sessions. The Congress gathers the world's top experts
on commercially available and developing OSGi implementations, exploring
the latest end-to-end architectures and solutions across multiple
environments as expressed by the theme "Convergence: Going Mobile,
Driving, and Connecting the Home with OSGi Solutions."
Motorola supports the open-standards based
OSGi service platform in a wide variety of uses across the company.
The Automotive Division of Motorola has taken a leadership position
in the EU-funded "Global System for Telematics" research program.
This program will create a standard and open framework architecture
for end-to-end in-vehicle telematics using the OSGi service platform
as a core standard -- allowing the vehicle manufacturers to remotely
manage their telematics services and helping to resolve the life-cycle
dilemma between the car and the consumer electronics domain.
In the mobile world, Motorola is helping
to drive the vision of the OSGi Mobile Experts Group (MEG) and JSR-232
efforts, recently showcasing the world's first OSGi implementation
of a mobile operations management system. As a leader in developing
next-generation broadband applications and devices, Motorola developed
the industry's first OSGi-based home gateway -- the Media Station
(MS) 1000. This managed application gateway enables service providers
to offer value-added services and creates opportunities for third-party
developers to deploy a host of next-generation applications. The
Motorola MS1000 is deployed as part of the Shell HomeGenie smart
home solution, currently launching in selected markets throughout
the United States.
"Motorola is pleased to be a part of the
OSGi Alliance World Congress again," said Padmasree Warrior, CTO
of Motorola and keynote speaker at the 2004 World Congress. "Our
device and infrastructure products, when seamlessly connected, will
bring voice, media and data-rich services to people wherever they
are -- at home, at work, in the auto or out in the world. The OSGi
Service Platform is one of the enabling technologies Motorola will
use to realize our seamless mobility vision."
"We're grateful to Motorola, not only for
the sponsorship of this Congress, but for their involvement with
OSGi from the very start," said Deepak Kamlani, Executive Director
of the OSGi Alliance. "Motorola has been instrumental in driving
worldwide acceptance of the OSGi Service Platform for delivery and
management of multiple applications and services to all types of
networked devices in home, vehicle, mobile and other environments.
We look forward to their participation."
Building on last year's highly successful
Congress in Dusseldorf, Germany, the OSGi Alliance recently formed
a Mobile Expert Group (MEG), co-chaired by Motorola, to define the
requirements and specifications to tailor and extend the OSGi Service
Platform for mobile devices. The 2004 World Congress will provide
an inside look at the work being performed within the OSGi Alliance
by its members to create device middleware solutions for the mobile
industry.
The Hilton Barcelona is the host hotel for
both conference sessions and exhibitions. Pre and post conference
workshops are offered on October 11 and 15, with the three-day Congress
covering business, vertical deployments and technology on October
12-14, and parallel tracks focusing on Automotive Electronics, Connected
Home, and Mobile and Wireless Devices. Online registration offers
reductions for workshop/conference packages and an early bird discount
available until July 23, 2004. The event is being produced for the
OSGi Alliance by Global Inventures.
