Atlantic Technology Sets New Standard with High Performance
System 2200 Compact Home Theater Speakers (8/1/2004)
Atlantic Technology, one of the first manufacturers
of loudspeaker systems specifically designed for home theater, has
introduced the System 2200 home theater speaker system, with high
performance compact front and center speakers, switchable dipole/bipole
surrounds, and a powered box-type subwoofer. The attractive system
sets a new standard for the company for high performance at modest
cost.
All of the System 2200 speakers are timbre
matched to ensure a seamless soundstage and a completely immersing
multichannel sound experience. The speakers are also tonally matched
to the Atlantic Technology System 1200 speakers, allowing consumers
to mix and match speakers from either or both systems as they wish.
Each of the full-range speakers employs the company's sophisticated
4.5-inch GLH (Graphite Loaded Homopolymer) woofers and a newly engineered
1-inch soft dome tweeter.
The 2200 LR front speakers each feature a
pair of woofers vertically flanking a single tweeter. This arrangement,
known as a D'Appolito Array configuration, gives the speakers extremely
linear horizontal dispersion for a broad "sweet spot," while also
controlling the vertical dispersion to prevent unwanted reflections
from the floor or ceiling.
The 2200 C center channel features a pair
of woofers arranged horizontally with a raised tweeter between them
to ensure highly intelligible dialogue reproduction for movies and
multichannel music. The rear panel includes a pair of acoustic controls
to tailor the speaker output for the acoustic characteristics of
the room and speaker placement. The tweeter's tilt or roll-off slope
can be adjusted using a three-position HF (high frequency) Energy
switch, compensating for rooms that are acoustically reverberant
(live), damped (dead), or neutral. A Boundary Compensation switch
is included to adjust the lower-midrange output to compensate for
the sound coloration that occurs when the speaker is placed adjacent
to a TV screen or in a cabinet or bookshelf. Finally, Atlantic's
exclusive tilting base design allows the speaker to be aimed directly
at the listeners for optimum reproduction.
For surround channel reproduction, the 2200
SR dipole/bipole surround speakers use two pairs of the same drivers
for tonal consistency. They are arranged in a classic dipole configuration,
with one woofer and tweeter system angled toward the front of the
room and another system angled toward the rear.. In the dipole mode,
the speaker produces a diffuse and enveloping soundfield preferred
for viewing movies. In the bipole mode, it produces a more direct
soundfield, which many prefer for multichannel music, or any situation
where dipoles are not necessarily desired.
The 422 SB subwoofer features a long-throw
12-inch composite cone with a 2-inch, four layer vented aluminum
voice coil. A powerful 225-watt internal amplifier drives the system
to produce high bass levels from 25 Hz to 150 Hz (+/- 3 dB). The
subwoofer has line-level stereo inputs, as well as low level outputs,
a continuously variable crossover adjustment (40 - 140 Hz), 18 dB/
Octave low-pass output, and a phase inversion switch. It incorporates
Atlantic's exclusive Clear Filter Technology(TM), which actually eliminates
the deleterious effects that the subwoofer's enclosure itself can
have on the sound.
The Atlantic Technology System 2200 speakers
are all currently available in maple and feature elegant curved
metal grills. The speakers are also available in finishes of gloss
black or silver at a marginal cost premium. Suggested retail price
for the 2200 LR in maple is $460 per pair; suggested retail price
for the 2200 C in maple is $375 each; suggested retail price for
the 2200 SR is $460 per pair; suggested retail price of the 422
SB in maple is $705.
