The 2003 Apprentice Skills Challenge Sponsors commend apprentices for skill, effort and enthusiasm (26/11/2003)

The prize giving for the industry's famous Apprentice Skills Challenge took place recently at a Presentation Day at BT Regional HQ, Brindley Place, Birmingham. Representatives from the UK's leading security inspectorates, NSI, SITO and SSAIB and the competition main sponsor, BT Redcare all commented on how impressed they were with the standard of work carried out by apprentices during the challenge, and commended them all for their hard work and enthusiasm.

"The overall standard of work and the knowledge displayed by the apprentices certainly bodes well for the future for the security industry," said Jim Gough, Sales Director of Cooper Security, one of the prize presenters. "We have always believed that quality training is essential to the future of our industry, and these apprentices really showed us the extremely positive benefits that good training brings."

The Challenge took place at IFSEC 2003 and was judged over the 4 days by inspectors from the NSI, SSAIB and SITO. The overall winners who were also overall day heat winners across the 4 days were:

* 1st Prize sponsored by BT Redcare (Red Letter activity day worth £500 per apprentice) presented by Glyn Rogers, BT Redcare - James Hughes from Birmingham Alarm Technicians and Ricky Brown from Select Alarm Systems

* 2nd Prize sponsored by NSI (Red Letter activity day worth £250 per apprentice) presented by Tom Mullarkey, NSI - Antony Shah and Nick Miladinovic from Kings Security

* 3rd Prize - sponsored by Mills Tools (Full set of tools) - presented by Jim Gough, Cooper Security - Ashley Gray and James Redgrave from Essex Security Systems

* 4th Prize - Steven Bunby and Daniel Verity from GCD Security

All overall day heat prize winners also received an ACT Meter.

The Challenge is open to anybody who is currently undertaking a Modern Apprenticeship scheme. The objective is to install an Intruder Alarm System in 1 1/2 hours, incorporating Remote Signalling, installed in compliance with BS 4737 and DD243.
