Five Global Players Achieve New OSGi Certification
(22/10/2003)
ACUNIA, Atinav, IBM, ProSyst, and Siemens VDO
announce OSGi Service Platform Release 3 certified products at compliance
program launch
The OSGi Alliance today announced that ACUNIA,
Atinav, IBM, ProSyst, and Siemens VDO are the first five companies
worldwide to have passed certification testing for their OSGi Service
Platform Release 3 based products. This underscores the growing
adoption of the OSGi Service Platform in today's real-world deployments.
The availability of certified compliant Service
Platforms allows customers to purchase products, confident in the
knowledge that they meet the requirements for the OSGi Service Platform
Release 3 Specification. The specification facilitates the installation
and operation of multiple network services on a single device (e.g.,
an in-vehicle information system, smart handheld, set-top box, entertainment
platform, multimedia or residential gateway).
"This is another great achievement for the
OSGi organization," said Dr. John R. Barr, President of OSGi Alliance,
and Director of Standards Realization for Motorola. "Producing a
compliant framework is a major undertaking and the availability
of several in conjunction with the start of the program is further
indication of the market demand and increasing acceptance of OSGi
technology for the delivery of services to networked devices. While
other operating platforms are frequently delayed in their release,
the members of the OSGi Alliance are consistently meeting their
objectives for enhancing and supporting the OSGi Service Platform."
The announcement of compliant products is
made in conjunction with the second annual OSGi World Congress being
held October 21-24 in Dusseldorf, Germany. These companies with
certified service platforms, as well as other OSGi member companies
and deployers, are discussing the latest business opportunities
and deployments.
The OSGi Service Platform supports network
delivered services for a remote device that can then run locally
or in conjunction with other network resources. The specification
is explicitly designed to be open and synergistic with a wide range
of existing networking and computer technologies and enhances virtually
all current networking standards and initiatives. In the same way,
the specification adds value to existing wireline and wireless networks
while being neutral to and complementing cable, 3G, 802.11, xDSL
and other high-speed access technologies. It allows service providers
to deliver value-added services of their own and selectively allow
delivery of services provided by third party providers. The OSGi
compliance program ensures that third parties can use the OSGi service
platform specification to create value-added services that can be
delivered over a variety of networking systems using platforms incorporating
compliant OSGi service platforms.
These certified OSGi Service Platform Release
3 based products are just part of the growing list of products,
services, industry adoptions, and deployments incorporating the
specifications and serve as the foundation of a growing value-chain
of OSGi based software.
