MEM 250 Unveils Wire-Free Lighting System (22/10/2003)

Leading lighting control and dimming specialist, MEM 250, a division of Eaton Electric Limited, has unveiled an innovative wire-free digital lighting control system under the brand name Studio 5.

Studio 5 is a suite of products, designed and manufactured in the UK that offers features which enable full lighting control for most commercial office, retail, hotel, conference and leisure environments as well as for the domestic market in applications such as luxury apartment projects.

The hub of the system is the digital marshalling box, (DMB) which provides the intelligence to control and adjust all of the connected fittings, in response to a variety of inputs. It provides all the control and dimming functions needed for both a commercial or office environment as well as architectural lighting control which is used in scene-setting for example in restaurants, hotels and conference facilities. With other conventional systems, you must choose between architectural dimming or commercial functions.

The wire-free technology used in Studio 5 is RF signal which sends encrypted messages from switches, scene recallers, sensors and hand held devices to the DMBs. RF is ideal for this because it works so well in buildings, it saves installation time and cost and it is very flexible. Traditional systems need to be fully wired, requiring a bus network, area controllers and bus power supply units, all very expensive to install as well as requiring specialist commissioning.

Studio 5 provides features that enable the user or installer to re-configure the entire installation from a hand held device in minutes, thus changing how it responds to its various inputs. Traditional systems require an engineer with a PC connected to the bus network to re-program them which again has obvious cost implications.
