Home Audio Video interoperability Consortium Announces
New Technical Initiative
The Home Audio Video interoperability (HAVi)(TM) Consortium, today
announced the formation of a new technical working group, The File
Management Working Group. It will be lead by the Technical Steering
Committee's chairman, Fernando Matsubara of Mitsubishi Electric.
The new working group will focus on extending and enhancing the
HAVi specification.
The File Management Working Group is responsible
for defining facilities to manage private data content over the
HAVi network. The new facilities will further enhance existing HAVi
content management by supporting retrieval and storage of content
material such as photos, movies, and songs in devices connected
to the HAVi network. The envisioned new File Manager will support
multi-format digital items with diverse QoS requirements, ranging
from simple text or still pictures files to high definition A/V
clips. The new facilities will complement current HAVi services
which concentrate in playback and recording of digital streams.
The unparalleled technical features of the IEEE 1394 FireWire(C)
bus will continue to play a fundamental role.
The addition of a File Manager will offer
consumers and easy and friendly way to globally manage the content
of the home entertainment network. The working group is expected
to deliver specifications for new APIs or extensions to existing
APIs in order to provide content management facilities to applications
by the end of 2003.
