Sony Selects OpenTV's Device Mosaic as the Browser for Sony's Cocoon Series Products

OpenTV, one of the world's leading interactive television companies, today announced that Sony Corporation, Inc. has selected OpenTV's browser product, Device Mosaic, as the standard browser for an advanced line of Sony audio-video products called the Cocoon series.

The Cocoon series is an advanced line of Sony products including a hard disk recorder (HDD) with PVR functionality. All of the audio-video products, grouped under the Cocoon Brand, provide access to downloadable content from the Internet, while some also provide access to an IPG and email. Examples of Cocoon series products, include a receiver with an embedded terrestrial tuner and a home theater unit with a hard disk drive which can download content from the Internet. Cocoon series products first became available in Japan at the end of April, 2003.

OpenTV's Device Mosaic solution provides Sony Cocoon with flexible access to rich HTML content, enabling viewers to enjoy the advanced features and functionalities such as IPG and email, in addition to the ability to browse the web and download audio or video content from the Internet. For example, viewers can quickly download an entire 90 minute movie, enabling a diverse and robust television experience, by taking advantage of access to high-speed connections, the advanced features of the Sony Cocoon products, and the functionality of OpenTV's Device Mosaic browser.

According to JEITA, (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association), 2.3 million DVD/HDD products were shipped in Japan during 2002. Sony is responding to the demand for DVD/HDD products in the Japanese market. The initial release has been in Japan only, but they do plan to expand release of this product to Europe and the United States.

"Sony and OpenTV have had a long-term partnership on provisioning HTML solutions for many of Sony's audio-video related products," said James Ackerman, CEO of OpenTV. "OpenTV is pleased to expand this partnership to the new advanced Cocoon series."
