Sony Selects OpenTV's Device Mosaic as the Browser
for Sony's Cocoon Series Products
OpenTV, one of the world's leading interactive television companies,
today announced that Sony Corporation, Inc. has selected OpenTV's
browser product, Device Mosaic, as the standard browser for an advanced
line of Sony audio-video products called the Cocoon series.
The Cocoon series is an advanced line of
Sony products including a hard disk recorder (HDD) with PVR functionality.
All of the audio-video products, grouped under the Cocoon Brand,
provide access to downloadable content from the Internet, while
some also provide access to an IPG and email. Examples of Cocoon
series products, include a receiver with an embedded terrestrial
tuner and a home theater unit with a hard disk drive which can download
content from the Internet. Cocoon series products first became available
in Japan at the end of April, 2003.
OpenTV's Device Mosaic solution provides
Sony Cocoon with flexible access to rich HTML content, enabling
viewers to enjoy the advanced features and functionalities such
as IPG and email, in addition to the ability to browse the web and
download audio or video content from the Internet. For example,
viewers can quickly download an entire 90 minute movie, enabling
a diverse and robust television experience, by taking advantage
of access to high-speed connections, the advanced features of the
Sony Cocoon products, and the functionality of OpenTV's Device Mosaic
browser.
According to JEITA, (Japan Electronics and
Information Technology Industries Association), 2.3 million DVD/HDD
products were shipped in Japan during 2002. Sony is responding to
the demand for DVD/HDD products in the Japanese market. The initial
release has been in Japan only, but they do plan to expand release
of this product to Europe and the United States.
"Sony and OpenTV have had a long-term partnership
on provisioning HTML solutions for many of Sony's audio-video related
products," said James Ackerman, CEO of OpenTV. "OpenTV is pleased
to expand this partnership to the new advanced Cocoon series."
