First DVD Player With Wireless Connectivity Brings
Digital Entertainment Into Living Rooms
Gateway Evolves as a Branded Integrator With Innovative Addition
to Its Consumer Electronics Family
Offering consumers a simple and affordable way to deliver virtually
any digital media format from their PCs to their home entertainment
centers, Gateway, Inc. today introduces the Gateway(TM) Connected
DVD Player, the first product of its kind to deliver wireless PC
connectivity to U.S. customers. The cutting-edge progressive-scan
DVD player that doubles as a digital media device is available today
at just $250.
The ability to access progressive-scan DVD
movies, MP3 music files and digital photos in the living room delivers
a host of consumer benefits. For example, the whole family can now
enjoy slide shows of vacation photos on TV. MP3 music files can
be retrieved from the PC for playing on the stereo system in dynamic
surround sound for family and friends, while digital videos have
double the impact when projected on a large screen with realistic
audio.
The innovative new product is part of Gateway's
transformation from a traditional PC company into a branded integrator
of personalized technology solutions, and a natural complement to
the Gateway 42-inch plasma TV which, at $2,999 (2), has quickly
become the best-selling product of its type in the U.S. Gateway
on May 8 announced an ambitious plan to launch 50 new Gateway-branded
products in 15 consumer electronics and technology categories by
the end of 2003.
"Consumers have been looking for a way to
enjoy their music, movies and photos in the most comfortable room
of their house," said Matt Milne, Gateway's general manager of digital
solutions. "The Gateway Connected DVD Player is a new and affordable
means to bring digital content into the living area. This revolutionary
device underscores Gateway's commitment to deliver solutions that
make it easy for consumers to discover, access and control their
digital media."
Using the Gateway Connected DVD Player, consumers
can retrieve content from any PC in the home via a wired Ethernet
connection or an 802.11b wireless network. Advantages of a wireless
network include simplified set-up and a cleaner, more aesthetically
pleasing appearance.
The unit's progressive-scan DVD technology
delivers higher picture resolution and twice the image quality of
regular television when playing DVD movies. The Gateway Connected
DVD Player also simplifies digital entertainment with a single remote
control for navigating all types of digital media files and controlling
the DVD player through a simple user interface on the TV screen.
"This follow-on product to Gateway's 42-inch
plasma TV targets the ever-popular DVD category," said Danielle
Levitas, IDC director, consumer devices and services. "DVD players
continue to enjoy strong sales and the integration of advanced features
at an affordable price point - particularly wireless connectivity
- will help drive demand for these devices."
Cutting-Edge Technology Made Simple
Set-up and installation are quick and easy.
The player works straight out of the box with just a few clicks
necessary to install the software on the PC. The system connects
through a home network to retrieve data from a designated networked
PC and supports MPEG and WMA audio streaming. Navigation of the
Gateway Connected DVD Player is done by a seamless user interface
displayed on the TV. This interface allows easy setup and selection
and playback of music, video or photo files located on any Windows
98 or above PC in the home.
The Gateway Connected DVD player is Windows
compatible and supports composite, component and s-video signals.
It's also compatible with multimedia databases such as Windows Media
Player and Music Match. To ensure customers a vast selection of
high-quality sound, picture and video, the player runs a wide array
of file formats such as DVD, CD-R/RW, JPEG, MP3, Kodak picture CD,
Dolby Digital(R) and DTS Digital(R) encoding. Offering powerful
surround sound, six channels are available for audio output including
stereo, coaxial digital, optical digital and headphones.
