Case studies Smart Home Installation in Exclusive Madrid Residence (4/6/2007) By Jorge Ruiz-Olivares Pérez, TELDOM Installation company TELDOM was asked to design and install a state-of-the-art smart home system in a residence located in a closed, exclusive development in north Madrid. The 500m2 home is built on one floor with a small loft, and sits on a 3000 square metre plot of land, and as the client put it, "These days, a quality home is unimaginable without having smart home devices." The aim of the project was to provide the home with high-quality features in the form of a smart home system, including comfort, leisure and security, but while the home has enviable light conditions thanks to its generous windows and skylights, these advantages became challenges when considering which security devices to use to protect the home.
The technological evaluation of the project was supervised by TELDOM's José Manuel Gasalla Benítez and Jorge Ruiz-Olivares Pérez. Planning and implementation The structure of the installation and electrical powering of the devices used was semi-centralised, with DIN rail devices placed in two circuit breaker boards and with sensors and detectors distributed throughout the home. This achieved a reduction in the number of devices initially required, as well as in the amount of cabling needed to connect the devices.
Personnel involved in this project included the engineers supervising the project, two technicians specialised in smart home installations and one electrician with a helper. The installation was carried out in parallel with the entire refurbishment of the home and took four months to complete. Security and Access Control The security system begins in the paved entrance to the home, with a PIN access control and card reader which allows access to the grounds and disarms the outside security system.
The remaining remote functions can be controlled via multiple touch screens inside the home or via RF remote controls. A combination of infrared barriers and digital IP security cameras that have an advanced movement detector function, were installed in the grounds. Comfort The temperature is controlled independently in each room using graphic, user-friendly touchscreens. Lights, dimmers and security blinds were all perfectly integrated in the home with custom-designed, high-tech push-button mechanisms and touchscreens.
Events can be created for them via local computer or the Internet. 19 SRBUS hidden movement detectors were installed in the home, which activate the lighting as a person passes by, or by detecting their presence, and these have the added feature of functioning as a reliable and indestructible intruder detector.
Equipment list The smart home system and interior security are based on the Ingenium BUSing system, and comprise: 8 x actuators, each with 6 outputs of up to 5A
to control lighting. Jorge Ruiz-Olivares Pérez is Telecommunications Engineer for TELDOM, a technology and engineering company based in Madrid. Tel +34 902 024 284
