Case studies AMX Home Control System Makes the Grade (14/11/2005) By TechniQuest UK limited - Special Projects Commissioned by one of the country's best-known recording and broadcasting professionals, TechniQuest UK of Wimbledon Village, was asked to provide fully-integrated control of a luxury, Grade II listed family home in south-west London. The installation was based around an AMX 'whole house' automation system. The overriding requirement was for a highly refined and architecturally discreet approach to the integration of the various systems, in keeping with the interior design and décor, while retaining the functionality and ease of use of each system.
In addition, the system needed to deliver the highest quality and most robust solution for each element of the project, which influenced the decision to employ effectively standalone systems, optimised for each requirement under the overall control of the AMX multimedia control solution. The system, based on the AMX Netlinx controller and the latest wireless AMX Modero touchscreen control panels, provides total control of the home's lighting, audio and video entertainment, fire and intruder security systems, and access to the Internet from the simple-to-use Modero hand-held panels. These are totally mobile and can be used via the wireless network anywhere in the four-storey house. In addition, the system controls a bespoke mixing and broadcasting studio, with specialist functions for handling voice, data and broadcasting communications.
First Impressions The first impression of the integrated technology greets visitors to the house in the form of TechniQuest's own-design voice and coded entry panel at the entrance to the grounds of the property. A hidden colour board camera relays the visitor's image to several fixed points of access control, as well as being distributed throughout the various display devices in the property on a dedicated TV channel. The CCTV network comprises high-performance external and internal security cameras that are digitised to allow hard disk digital storage and retrieval via the property's Ethernet network. Internally, the TechniQuest recessed access control entry stations feature a 5.5" colour LCD panel and voice station. The digitised access control entry image is also relayed to the main AMX Modero Viewpoint portable touchscreens via their two-way Ethernet capability. Wireless Control The wireless AMX 7.5" Modero Viewpoint touchpanels (MVP-7500) have an easy-to-follow screen display, featuring familiar icon 'buttons', enabling any member of the family to call up virtually any form of audio or visual entertainment, from the surround sound home cinema with 42" plasma screen in the main viewing area, to the whole-house distributed audio system, which allows a variety of analogue and digital audio sources to be played through in-wall, in-ceiling and floorstanding speakers located throughout the property. The panels allow the user to select the entertainment source, be it satellite or terrestrial TV, DVD audio and video, CD, SACD or radio, and play it through whichever device and room is selected.
The property is provided with a wireless IT network with a hardwired LAN back-up that provides both a LAN for internal data transfer and the platform for multi-user broadband. For maximum versatility, each area of hard-wired telecoms and data is provided with the data infrastructure to allow multiple data and telecoms connections, with the greatest concentration in the home working areas and equipment control hubs. Versatile and Intuitive An AMX Netlinx NI-3000 integrated controller was specified to provide a robust and powerful means of consolidated control and, in conjunction with the Modero ViewPoint touchscreen user interfaces, the system was able to satisfy the client's brief for a versatile and intuitive control solution.
Importantly, the AMX control system provides different levels of access for different users, so that certain controls, such as those for the broadcasting studio and the security and CCTV system, are only available to specified users, while general access is available to all members of the family and guests to control devices such as lights and entertainment systems. Furthermore, the household network can also be accessed remotely over the Internet using security-protected passwords to, for example, disable the intruder alarm to allow a tradesperson access or simply to remotely program a DVD recording.
