CHT Systems - Winner Of CEDIA Electronic Lifestyles Award 2003 For Best Home Theatre: Under $70,000 (2/2/2004)

Essay

From the first meeting with the client, he knew he wanted a pirate ship media room. He had already secured the 19th century ships wheel and purchased port-hole windows from a shipping supply yard. We actually built the side wall out where the front windows were so we could frame in the port-hole windows looking outside. From the front you see plate glass, from inside you see port-hole window with the view. The entire bar is washed in a teak wood stain giving it that old ship decking look and all of the hardware is all brass boating hardware. From the center of the room the ceiling was painted to resemble the sky of an open bow ship, the front of the stage was framed to resemble the bow of the ship as it would stick out in front. The entire bow was made from real discarded ship planks. The screen wall is covered in a sailing rope, layered vertically to fill the entire wall. Another neat feature is the door. It is one of these heavy brass and wood doors that actually locks tight. It took the framer a bit to set the door, but eventually it was set and you can spin the locking wheel to actually close the door and lock it. We had an attic space behind the screen. In order not to take away from the open bow appearance, we installed a rear projection system, housing the projector inside of a boxed room in the attic.
