Case studies AVL PRO - Winner Of CEDIA Electronic Lifestyles Award 2003 For Best Integrated Home: $900,000-$1,100,000 (27/11/2003)
Essay The client's general requirement for the project: Of major importance to this client is convenience and simplicity of control of the systems within this 20,000 square foot residence. Provide a general description of the clients' (kids, ages, profession, etc.): Our client is a CEO of a major financial services firm who utilizes this part-time residence for business as well as a personal retreat with his wife. Family members frequently visit their home as well. What special considerations and roadblocks had to be overcome: Our initial task was to design a system that could manage other subsystems within this 20,000 square foot residence. The system had to be easy to operate, not only for our clients, but also any generation of family members who visit. The room that was designated for the theater also doubles as a hurricane safe-room with solid concrete poured walls. A back-up generator can power all of the theater systems. What did you, the designer/installer, do to accomplish the clients requirements and overcome the roadblocks: Prior to the actual installation, we created design documents to road map our final goals. Then, during all phases of construction we communicated with other project team members to ensure that our efforts complimented interior design details, cabinetry, construction schedules, and integration compatibility issues. Our end result was simplification of the management for all of the home sub-systems by using the power of the AMX system. These sub-systems include lighting control, multi-room audio, a media room surround system in the family room and adjoining pub, a guest suite media lounge, a residential theater system, motorized window treatments, climate control, as well as control of many water features. We placed in-wall touch panels in the kitchen and foyer. A tabletop panel is used on a bedside nightstand in the master suite. The theater, library and the family room systems are controlled via handheld touch panels. Describe the five most used functions of the system and how they benefit the client: 1. The lighting control system, with its 18 panels, 450 lighting zones, 24 window treatment motors, and 89 lighting control keypads with engraved buttons, makes the control lighting effortless. The time clock feature conveniently automates specific exterior lights and fountain features. 2. The whole-house audio is controlled throughout the residence from touch panels as well as the lighting key pads, via the backbone of the home automation system. This design promotes the aesthetics of consistent keypad style with the added flexibility of expanding the audio control to any of the lighting control keypads. 3. The theater's AMX touch panel adds to the enjoyment of their experience. A simple press of a button activates the audio/video equipment, motorized drapes, climate control and lighting. 4. The automation systems allows the clients to easily monitor and change the home's climate control system to prepare various areas of the residence for incoming guests. 5. The AMX system provides control of the property-wide security system for the ability to monitor various zones with DVR backups.
