Welcome to all our new subscribers who signed up at the recent CEDIA UK Expo - please don't be shy about giving us your feedback! This was our fifth Expo (fourth as an exhibitor) and both the event and the industry have grown considerably in that time. The official figures from CEDIA are 7,399 visitors attended over the 3 days, representing a 21% increase from last year. Despite some quiet moments, and fewer builders and architects visiting our stand compared to last year, we had a great show - there were plenty of new companies and products to see, and as always, it was an invaluable opportunity for us to find out what is happening at the coal face from installers. Looking at some of the other events we've attended over the past few weeks is a good illustration of how the industry has changed. At the beginning of June, ABB sponsored a Smart Building Controls Technology press briefing where a panel representing electrical contractors, manufacturers, industry associations, system integrators and end users discussed the UK intelligent home market. The discussion focussed on the KNX standard and the need for training and accrediting installers. Then came OFFSITE2007 at the Building Research Establishment (BRE). This conference and exhibition explored how modern construction and advanced technologies are coming together to deliver higher performing, more sustainable and smarter buildings. The Big Build is a key part of OFFSITE and comprises six demonstration properties which will stay in place at the BRE Innovation Park for two years. One of the houses, the Hanson EcoHouse, features Ingenium controls for lighting, heating, skylight, sensors and alarms. Key representatives from the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) were in London last week demonstrating the latest DLNA-compliant interoperable products. With over 220 members, the DLNA promotes a vision of a wired and wireless interoperable network of personal computers, consumer electronics and mobile devices in the home. This week we visited a show house at the King's Meadow development by David Wilson Homes in Newmarket, courtesy of Armour Home Electronics. The development has been pre-wired for the Systemline Modular multiroom system. The brochure describing the options available includes kitchen upgrades, home entertainment systems, fire place upgrades and landscaping, with the description of the home entertainment systems being kept very simple and with pricing that compares favourably to landscaping and hot tubs. There is little doubt that the residential technology industry - whether you call it smart home, home automation, intelligent living, domotics etc - is no longer the domain of the elite or DIY enthusiasts. The challenge for the industry is to educate and train all those who are involved in installing residential systems.
